Ann Mahdy is a Communicatons and Public Relations Manager for Lenovo A few years ago, Solid State Drives started appearing in laptops. Costs were high and capacity was low, and most of the industry stuck with good old-fashioned Hard Disk Drives. Now that it’s 2012, it’s time to rethink the drives you and your customers are using. After all, HDD has been around for a long time (since 1956) so it is not surprising that there is a new drive on the block. So what is the difference between the two drives? To assist in sorting this out we posed a number of questions to Annabelle Thuan, Lenovo SMB Marketing Manager. AM: What is the difference between SSD and HDD? AT: The main difference in the technology is that solid state is a flash-based storage and has no moving parts, while hard disk drives are electromechanical and have a moving component called a spinning platter. As you might expect, with no moving pieces, SDD is more reliable and durable because it can better absorb shock from laptops’ bumps and drops. The other big difference is speed. SSD is much faster because it is NAND memory. This means that data can be located instantaneously by address. HDD, on the other hand, has a two-step process to access the information. The first is that it needs to “seek” the right track on the disk, and the second is that it needs to spin to the right part of the track. This causes a slight delay compared to solid states. Side by Side...

USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive

USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive

New ThinkPad 500GB & 750GB USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive Offers More Storage & Faster Data Transfer Mark Cadiz manages Lenovo’s options, helping customers get the most value out of their PCs by leveraging a full portfolio of devices. His previous product, the USB 2.0 Secure Hard Drive, has become a customer favorite for its simplicity, security and cool factor. In this post, he debuts the new and improved USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive. Companies today are concerned about how to secure mobile storage devices, especially since the ramifications of losing a portable hard drive with sensitive or personal customer information are damaging from a legal, financial (think about Sarbanes-Oxley or HIPAA) and reputational standpoint. We created the original USB 2.0 Secure Hard Drive to make information-sharing within a corporation easy, yet highly secure. The Secure HDD has been crucial for government, health care, insurance companies, financial institutions, HR departments and executives with sensitive data. Today, we’re upgrading this James Bondish tool to one with larger storage and faster USB 3.0 data transfer with the USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive. While easy to use, first and foremost, we wanted to make sure it maintains the highest levels of security by: Incorporating a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) certified 256-bit AES hardware encryption algorithm Including a standard SATA 2.5” hard drive housed in an enclosure...

Lenovo Multimedia Remote with Keyboard

Lenovo Multimedia Remote with Keyboard

Every once in a while, a product comes out of nowhere and captures people's imagination. Our Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard (N5901), released last year, was one such product--and we sold a lot of them.  Heck, I even bought a couple to put under the tree when my kids fell in love with the sample I brought home.  We got lots of feedback, too. Our fans and followers on Lenovo Blogs, Facebook and YouTube all gave us insights and ideas for the follow-up product. One request was nearly universal, so let's get that out of the way first.  Yes, the new Lenovo Multimedia Remote with Keyboard (N5902) has a backlit keyboard.  I like the fact that it lights just enough--it isn't trying so hard that it's distracting, and there isn't a lot of light bleeding around the keys.  I think it looks great and I hope you agree.  Even the picture below makes it look brighter than it is. Of course, we didn't stop there.  The trackball is gone, now replaced by something very similar to the optical trackpoint in our new ThinkPad Tablet Portfolio case.  On the N5902, your finger moves like it would for a trackball but there are no moving parts.  There is also a slight ridge down the center that give you up/down scrolling, which works smoothly and naturally.  The mouse buttons are now separate and incorporated into a sleek silver band that surrounds the keyboard itself. It all comes in a package that...

A match made by design.

A match made by design.

Have you ever been on a trip and wished you had your second monitor handy? I certainly have. A second monitor is so useful in today's world that it's hard to remember what it was like when I only had one. Fortunately, Lenovo has come to the rescue with the introduction of our new ThinkVision LT1421 mobile monitor.  The mobile monitor connects quite simply with a typical USB cable to your ThinkPad, or any other computer for that matter. We chose USB so that it would provide the user with a one cable power and signal connection. I like this much better than dragging around cumbersome VGA, power, or HDMI cables. At under two pounds and less than one centimeter thin, the 14-inch ThinkVision is the perfect traveling companion for the multi-monitor inclined. The prop folds flat when not in use The tip reminds me of Dorothy and her ruby red slippers We studied a wide array of methods to support the monitor We designed an elegant prop that folds from the back of the monitor to position the display at the user desired angle. At the tip of the prop is a red rubber cap that keeps the monitor from sliding around and adds a spark of color. A small red detail is so right for a Think branded offering. You can cycle through 16 brightness levels using a simple button located on the back surface of the product. We put it there because it's not used very often, and it was pretty much the only place it would fit. Dressed for success and ...
