Jin Li, one of our well known Lenovo advocates, reveals why he collects ThinkPads

My name is Jin Li (@lead_org); I am a Lenovo Insider (Lenovo brand advocate), Lenovo Community Advocate, Microsoft MVP, blogger, and a serious ThinkPad addict! I currently own more than 60 ThinkPads, and my collection is growing. So, why do I have so many ThinkPad laptops? I love ThinkPad, and I love the whole user experience associated with owning a ThinkPad. There is nothing quite as satisfying as owning a ThinkPad, servicing it, and upgrading it so that it will still function in a decade’s time when other laptops have gone into the eWaste recycling bin. I sometimes feel that ThinkPad is more than an inanimate object that you simply use then throw out, but rather it is an embodiment of human knowledge and cultures, which every owner should treasure. ThinkPad represents everything that is great about mankind, and how we can translate our culture and thinking into great functional design, which other people could equally appreciate (or discover). By collecting ThinkPads, I can discover and learn about the cultural and design evolution of a great brand, and how it changes overtime. At the same time, I can also marvel at how ingenious ThinkPad designers are, to allow the original ThinkPad design elements to remain identifiable in products 20 years after its release. One could say that ThinkPad brand has the greatest brand pedigree! Jin Li has...

ThinkPad Tablet 2 with Optional Digitizer Pen

ThinkPad Tablet 2 with Optional Digitizer Pen

We gave guest author Michael Archambault a brand new ThinkPad Tablet 2 to carry around with him for a few days to get his opinion on the tablet that is redefining business.  His verdict:  the ThinkPad Tablet 2 wins the  gold medal.   With the introduction of Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 8, OEMs like Lenovo have become inspired to create amazing Windows tablets that can tackle work or play; the ThinkPad Tablet 2 is one of these amazing tablets. The new ThinkPad Tablet 2 comes preloaded out of the box with Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 8. While most other tablets in the same price range only offer Windows RT and lock out the ability to use Legacy applications, you won’t have that issue with this tablet. Having the full edition of Windows 8 means you’ll be able to run all the familiar apps from past versions of Windows that you have been used to; this is thanks to the next generation Intel Inside processor. In my testing with the Intel Inside Processor it was able to smoothly power the Windows 8 interface while providing enough power to run basic legacy applications on the familiar desktop. I was able to test the ThinkPad Tablet 2 with the ThinkPad Tablet 2 Enterprise Dock; the dock provides multiple USB ports, Ethernet, HDMI out, and a rapid charging port for the device. I connected the ThinkPad Tablet 2 to the device and used it with an external 22" monitor; while I was...

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2

In the past, I used my tablet for simple web surfing and my trusty ThinkPad laptop for getting serious work done. But since I got a hold of Lenovo’s new ThinkPad Tablet 2, it’s changed the way I look at—and use—my devices. I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that my PC is now <600 grams and has 10 hours of battery life. I’ve been using it extensively and I thought I’d share a few cool things you can do with the ThinkPad Tablet 2. First a quick spec summary of this 10.1” tablet: it sports a dual-core Intel Atom processor, 2GB memory, weighs under 600 grams, has an active digitizer pen, a resolution of 1366x768, dual cameras (8MP and 2MP), HDMI and USB 2.0 ports, SIM tray, MicroSD card slot, GPS, WLAN, BT and NFC radios. (Full spec list here.) With that out of the way, here are 8 cool things you can do with the ThinkPad Tablet 2: 1.      Install your favorite apps. The Windows app store is growing by the day. The ThinkPad tablet runs Windows 8 Pro so you can download and install any traditional desktop application along with the mobile apps available there. Anything you can run on Windows XP, Vista or 7 will run flawlessly on this tablet.  2.      Charge/sync your devices. With the tablet’s USB 2.0 port, you can connect phones, MP3 players and other tablets...

Turk Pipkin and his education and action nonprofit organization, The Nobelity Project, tackles pressing global issues such as hunger, climate change, and war and peace through powerful documentary films. One issue close to his heart is the education of children in Africa, and recently Pipkin was instrumental in building a computer lab for students in Kenya ("Bringing Education to the World, One Country at a Time"). While in awe of his activism, we were also mesmerized by Pipkin’s multifaceted Do spirit. Pipkin is a respected author of 10 books, a TV writer, and a former stand-up comedian and entertainer (“The Sopranos” fans may recognize Pipkin as Aaron Arkaway, the narcoleptic boyfriend of Tony Soprano’s sister, Janice).  Pipkin reveals how his past and present has connected to provide technology, inspiration and hope to children. How did the Nobelity Project collaboration with AMD and Lenovo form? The collaboration came from some great people at AMD, specifically the efforts of Bart Arnold, and Cory Grenier at Lenovo. One of our favorite new computer labs is at Kabiruini Girls Secondary School. The 200-plus students have new Lenovo ThinkCentres and Thinkpads with AMD technology. These are some happy and creative students, and their grades have gone...

Matthew Lanetti's late grandfather, Mike Zurratt, was a longtime IBMer who joined the company after serving his country as a United States Marine. Here he is standing with what is believed to be an IBM 704 that was installed on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. Matthew recently added the X1 Carbon to his ThinkPad collection. We think his grandfather would be proud.   Matthew Lanetti represents a younger, vibrant generation of ThinkPad enthusiasts – he has a DO spirit, is not afraid to challenge himself and is always connected. With many technology options available to youth today, he reveals how an old T30 and a special tie to ThinkPad’s legacy turned him into a ThinkPad fan. I discovered ThinkPad when my father gave me an old T30 he found in a stack of junk that was to be thrown away in his office. I had started to get into computers and my dad thought an old laptop, that probably didn't work, would be great for me to learn from. Being a tech enthusiast, I had heard of ThinkPad and had seen them in stores. My maternal grandfather had worked at IBM as a field engineer manager for 35 years until he died in 2002, when I was five years old. I don't remember much about him, except that he loved his job and IBM. I will never forget the moment when I first saw that ThinkPad. I was amazed when it started up with no problem. I remember staying up very late that night just playing with the T30 and...
