This post was written by the Lenovo Companion App Content Team. With Windows 8.1, it’s easier than ever to set up a home network. You can connect multiple PCs to printers, smartphones and other wireless devices to share music, videos and documents.  The quickest way to start “networking” with other devices in your home is to set up a HomeGroup. Any computer running Windows 8.1 can create or join a HomeGroup. It’s the simplest way to share files and folders, and takes seconds to set up: First, Prepare Your System For Sharing On A Home Network For a HomeGroup to work, you’ll need to turn on the "Find devices and content" feature: Swipe in from the right edge of your screen Go to Settings, then Change PC settings Tap or click Network Tap or click Connections, and select your network connection Turn on Find devices and content Turning on this feature automatically adjusts firewall and security settings. You can turn it off at anytime. Next, Create or Join a HomeGroup If you’re setting up a new computer, your HomeGroup will be created automatically. If a HomeGroup already exists on your network, you'll be asked to join it instead of creating a new one. After following steps 1 and 2 above, you can: Add a HomeGroup: Tap or click “HomeGroup,” then “Create.” Note the auto-generated password, which will be required when adding...

This post was written by the Lenovo Companion App Content Team. What would you do if all the data on your computer were suddenly inaccessible? Or your banking information was compromised? Unfortunately, these cyber threats are very real and prevalent. Thankfully, there are plenty of steps you can take to safely protect your PC and the data stored on it. We caught up with Gary Davis, chief consumer security evangelist at McAfee to get his “must do” list for securing your Lenovo device. Here are the seven critical steps he recommends you take today: 1. Always apply security software updates Select Lenovo systems arrive with a full-service trial version of McAfee® software that offers protection from viruses, malware and more. Whether you continue with this software or opt for a different antivirus program, you should always be sure it’s turned on and your system is set to apply software patches and updates. “Without fail, those updates are addressing the latest and most important security vulnerabilities,” Davis says. “This one step will go a long way in keeping your system safe.” 2. Make sure your security settings are current True, you can adjust settings so security updates are applied automatically in the background. But if you’re like many users, it’s possible you disabled a firewall or other setting (to access a game, for instance)...

Today, Lenovo is proud to launch its next-generation tower and rackmount servers based on the Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 Series family of processors. Similar to Lenovo’s success in the client segment, the strategy for the Lenovo ThinkServer portfolio is to offer enterprise-class, high-performing systems, with industry-leading reliability/flexibility and salient value — without unnecessary overhead. Lenovo has partnered with Intel to develop a robust family of servers whose design tenants were focused on the data creation and consumption explosion, and the need for optimized networking connectivity. Intel’s E5-2600 v3 family of processors provide a 50 percent increase in cores over the previous generation, with a maximum core count of 18 per socket and higher encrypted data transfer rates. This offers much greater performance aimed at today’s areas of IT focus, such as data analytics, private cloud deployments, media propagation and HPC. Our new Lenovo ThinkServer systems feature key innovations aimed at addressing the data center challenges adherent in these focus areas. I also wanted to mention that although there is a significant increase in processing power, the E5-2600 v3 family provides world-class energy efficiency. For the last several years, the big data momentum has steadily increased as large firms see the value of investing in data analytics. According to

In this edition of the Lenovo ThinkServer blog, we wanted to shed some light on how Lenovo servers and workstations are being deployed for the high-performance computing (HPC) industry. Joining me in this discussion is Vertical Marketing Manager, Chris McCoy, from the Lenovo ThinkStation team. Edgar: Hi Chris, can you tell us a bit about your work experience and how you see Lenovo ThinkStation fitting into the key verticals you manage? Also, do you see synergies with Lenovo ThinkServer? Chris: Hey Edgar, it’s a pleasure to be here with you. To answer the first part of your question, I joined the Lenovo ThinkStation product team about 18 months ago. Prior to coming to Lenovo, I spent more than 15 years working for global IT solution providers in both the private and public sectors. Lenovo has made tremendous investments in ThinkStation product engineering and critical technology partner alliances to devise, test and implement various hardware and software technologies in an effort to improve workflow and system performance as well as platform efficiencies. We do this to ensure that we’re designing and building platforms that can be tuned and configured to support very specific workflows across a very wide spectrum of customers, in industries such as Banking, Finance, Manufacturing, Architecture, Medical and Life Sciences, Media and Entertainment and the Energy Sector. To answer the second part of your question, in Lenovo, servers and...

As some of you may recall, last year I wrote an article on how the ThinkStation group had worked to achieve various application certifications to support upstream exploration workflows in the Oil & Gas industry.  Well, today, I’m proud to announce that this month we will be exhibiting our full line of professional ThinkStation desktop workstations, ThinkPad mobile workstations and solutions capabilities at the 76th Annual European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) conference in Amsterdam.  Since 1951, EAGE has brought together the very best in commercial scientific practices, academic research and new technology to help drive innovation and efficiencies in Oil & Gas and Near Surface Geosciences.  EAGE draws nearly 7,000 commercial and academic professionals from around the world to discuss and promote new advancements in geophysics, petroleum and reservoir engineering, mining and civil engineering methodologies.  So what might one expect to see from Lenovo at EAGE? Well, in addition to getting a glimpse of the newly designed P300, Lenovo’s latest and newly redesigned entry level workstation, showgoers will have an opportunity to experience a wide range of new and exciting technologies.  Attendees will get a look at Lenovo’s new fully virtualized and GRID enabled workstation, designed to support even the most robust and demanding 3D visualization requirements.  Powered by Citrix and...
