Inventing X1 – Quality

This third blog in the Inventing X1 series focuses on the new thin bezel design in the latest generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Customers have told us that they want thinner bezels. Research shows that they are viewed as more premium and are more aesthetically pleasing. However, thinner bezels present several engineering challenges. To address this preference, a complete redesign was necessary to accommodate wireless antenna placement with no deterioration of signal and maintain the proper positioning of the camera at the top of the screen.

Cool stuff, but why did we do this?

Connection Lost

The most frustrating message, especially when downloading the latest version of that all-important presentation, or the video conference with the team back at the office. Customers need reliable connectivity, whether at home on secure WiFi, or on the road with 4G LTE-A. Lenovo has always been focused on ensuring maximum quality wireless signals, however thinner bezels require new antenna design and placement within the system body. Metal mesh and gold-plated shielding and a new method of integrating radio-transparent windows ensure that the best signal possible is maintained.

The Art of The Selfie

There is certainly an art to the quality selfie. Many of us have repeatedly attempted to get our best angle, best lighting and best position for that professional look. It is no accident that most selfies are taken from at least eye level or above. Webcams are no different. Our business customers have said that they don’t like cameras at the bottom of the screen. Like those disastrous selfie moments, they produce unflattering results. They are often blocked by hands on the keyboard and not in an optimal position for group video conferencing. Despite the thinner bezel on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, it was never an option to move the camera below the screen.

As our flagship business notebook, the multi-award winning X1 Carbon design and engineering quality need to be second-to-none. Each Lenovo design starts with a human-centered approach focusing on end-user needs and desires. Innovation and engineering excellence combine to produce our best notebook yet.
